Stevie has a new record out with Adam Marsland

Stephen Kalinich’s work as a poet stems back to the 1960s when he collaborated with Beach Boys Dennis and Brian Wilson on a series of memorable tracks, but his words have been voiced by a slew of others including Paul McCartney, Diana Ross, P.F. Sloan, Neil Innes and Randy Crawford.

For his long-form poem “The Meaning” Kalinich commissioned Los Angeles producer/musician (and fellow Binghamton, N.Y. native) Adam Marsland to compose and record a score behind his reading of the work. Begun in 2016 and completed in 2020 during COVID-19 lockdown, Marsland took the Beach Boys’ most adventurous and esoteric late ’60s period as a jumping off point into a new sonic world, melding diverse analog instruments and worldless vocals into a compelling, moody soundscape that underscores the thoughtful drama of Kalinich’s prose.

Fans of ambient music, soundtrack music and the Beach Boys’ SMiLE sessions will find THE MEANING to be a wild and musically satisfying journey into the new and unknown.
